The KL2408 terminal is produced by Beckhoff and is part of the KL series. This unit operates as a digital output coupler within modular I/O stations. In an automation line, it converts control-level switching commands from the bus coupler into discrete load switching, letting PLCs energize solenoids, lamps, or contactors without additional relays. Its compact format allows it to sit directly on DIN rail segments next to complementary input terminals, simplifying distributed control cabinets.

Each of the module’s 8 outputs is rated for a continuous load of 0.5 A per channel, and the design uses positive switching so the supply voltage is routed to the load whenever a channel is activated. The outputs can switch ohmic, inductive, or lamp loads without recalibration. During turn-off, an energy absorber limits inductive kickback to < 150 mJ per channel, protecting adjacent electronics. If a fault short-circuits the output, internal current limiting restricts flow to < 2 A until the supervising controller de-energizes the line. The logic and power sections share a common 24 VDC supply, allowing direct wiring to standard control power buses without intermediate converters.

For field wiring, the terminal employs single-wire connection technology, meaning the switched conductor is routed through the module while the common return is shared on the power rail. Installation on a 35 mm mounting rail provides mechanical support and automatic grounding to the DIN carrier. The plastic housing carries an IP20 rating, so the terminal must be mounted inside an enclosure where dirt and moisture are controlled. Within that enclosure, it tolerates ambient humidity up to 95% and a temperature range from -25 °C to +60 °C. Reverse-polarity protection ensures accidental cross-wiring of the supply does not damage the output stages, supporting long-term reliability in densely populated control panels.
