The KL1722 analog input terminal is produced by Beckhoff as part of the KL Analog Input Modules series. It occupies a single terminal slice on the Bus Terminal system and converts two mains-level voltage signals into process data for the controller. Within an automation cell, the unit lets the PLC detect the presence or absence of 120 VAC or 230 VAC on field devices such as motor contactors and status lamps, isolating the high-voltage side from the low-voltage backplane.
The terminal accepts a nominal supply of 120/230 VAC on each channel, and built-in circuitry keeps the inputs electrically separated up to 3750 VAC for 1 minute to protect adjacent electronics. Two independent signal paths give the module 2 channels that share a resistive/capacitive input stage intended for wide-range AC sensing. Typical steady-state loading of each source is limited to 6 mA, which minimizes the burden on control transformers. The potential difference between the two inputs must not exceed 230 VAC. Internal logic updates the controller image after every 10 ms switching period, matching the hardware switching time, and enclosure sealing corresponds to an IP20 protection class for cabinet-only installation.
Field wiring is carried on screw terminals set up for 2-wire wiring, eliminating the need for a neutral jumper inside the module. Before each bit is reported, the analog stage passes through a 10 ms input filter that suppresses transient spikes from inductive loads. The resulting logic state is transferred to the controller as 2 input bits, one per channel, while system power for the slice remains confined to the K-bus because there are no power contacts on this terminal. Control system designers should reserve only 3 mA K-bus draw for this device, leaving additional backplane current for other modules in the station.
