The KL1488 is a digital input module produced by Beckhoff within the KL Digital Input Modules series. It is installed inside EtherCAT or Bus Terminal systems to bring on/off field signals into a controller without additional setup. In an automation cabinet, the module receives switching signals, references them to the shared power contact, and publishes each state to the bus so that PLC logic can react to limit switches, buttons, or proximity sensors. This makes it suitable for standard discrete sensing tasks where the control program only needs to detect whether a device is active or inactive.

The module connects sensors through a 1-wire topology, simplifying wiring because each signal shares a common return. A built-in input filter of 3 ms suppresses contact bounce so that short disturbances are ignored by the controller. All channels operate from a nominal supply of 24 V DC, matching typical control voltage rails. With 8 inputs available, one terminal can cover a complete sensor group while its polycarbonate housing provides electrical insulation. The feed-through power contact can conduct up to 10 A, so several downstream terminals may be supplied without separate wiring. Common-return wiring also helps keep field connections compact when nearby sensors share the same reference potential.

The module carries a protection rating of IP20, meaning it must be mounted inside an enclosure but still allows finger-safe handling during panel assembly. Mechanical attachment uses a 35 mm DIN rail, and the body can be oriented freely because the installation position is not restricted. Inside the process image, the device occupies 8 input bits, allowing the PLC to read all channels in one byte. Each state change is indicated locally by a green LED for each channel, and signal switching follows a Ground switching scheme that references inputs to the 0 V line of the power contact. No user configuration is required after the terminal is snapped onto the rail because the bus coupler automatically assigns the address and makes the data available to the control program.
