Beckhoff’s ES3154 analog input terminal belongs to the ES EtherCAT Terminals series and digitizes 4–20 mA signals for controllers on an EtherCAT network. The module snaps onto a DIN rail and shares the outline of other ES terminals, allowing it to fit neatly into distributed I/O assemblies. In a distributed automation cell, it turns loop-powered sensor currents into cyclic bus data so the PLC can process measurements for closed-loop control.
The pluggable wiring level allows tool-free exchange, while the power contacts tolerate 10 A, which is enough to feed downstream two-wire transmitters without noticeable voltage drop. Internal isolation withstands 30 V max., helping protect the electronics against field shorts in low-voltage installations. Its housing measures 12 x 100 x 68 mm, so four modules can fit beside a 24 V supply inside a 300 mm cabinet section. With a protection rating of IP20, the terminal is intended for use inside an enclosure rather than on an exposed machine frame. An analog input filter with a 5 kHz cutoff attenuates higher-frequency noise before multiplex conversion, and distributed clocks synchronize sampling to the EtherCAT cycle for deterministic acquisition. The design is pluggable, and the ground reference is single-ended.
Each of the four inputs converts the industry-standard 4–20 mA loop into a digital value with 16-bit resolution, giving precise granularity for temperature, pressure, or level transmitters. The resulting data occupy 16 bytes of the controller’s process image, allowing compact mapping as additional ES terminals are inserted. Operating energy for the input circuitry is supplied via E-Bus, so no separate auxiliary connector is needed and wiring remains less crowded. With a polycarbonate housing, the module maintains electrical integrity, and its timing accuracy remains stable under typical machine vibration.
