The ER3204-0002 is a compact digital I/O box module manufactured by Beckhoff within the ER EtherCAT Box Modules series. It connects sensors and actuators directly to an EtherCAT network, enabling decentralized signal collection in automated machinery and conveyor cells. A die-cast zinc enclosure sealed against dust and splash allows the device to be mounted on moving tooling or exposed frame members where cabinet-mounted terminals would be impractical. This placement shortens cable runs, reduces panel wiring, and helps keep signal routing organized near the active machine area.
The module operates from a 24 VDC control rail and can supply up to 4 A to its internal electronics. Network continuity is provided by a pair of 2 x M8 sockets, 4-pin, so additional EtherCAT nodes can be daisy-chained without a separate switch. A galvanic barrier rated at 500 V isolates the fieldbus core from the supply domain to limit ground-loop currents and protect upstream controllers. The peripheral circuit also powers connected sensors and small actuators locally, which helps reduce the need for separate nearby distribution points. This isolation also helps keep communication stable when field wiring is routed near switched loads or other sources of electrical noise. Correct seating of the cord sets is assured when the M8 coupling nuts are tightened to 0.4 Nm, and once the plugs are engaged the enclosure’s IP67 rating helps prevent moisture from reaching the electronics during washdown or coolant splash.
Mechanical clearances are modest because the body measures only 26.5 mm deep, 126 mm high, and 30 mm wide. This compact housing can sit beside pneumatic manifolds or sensor clusters without obstructing service access, and it also leaves room for adjacent brackets, cable clips, and hose routing in crowded machine areas. With a mass of just 165 g, the device adds very little load to moving axes or lightweight support members. Two M3 screws secure the housing to the machine frame, and the narrow footprint leaves room for proper cable bend radii behind the EtherCAT ports so strain relief can be maintained in confined spaces.
