The EP7041-2002 is produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series and serves as a decentralized module that drives and monitors two-phase stepper motors in distributed automation. It combines power electronics and fieldbus connectivity in a sealed housing so that motion axes can be added directly on machines without separate control cabinets. Within an EtherCAT network, this module converts commanded position data into incremental steps, supplies phase current to the motor windings, and offers a separate brake output to hold the load when motion is complete.
The integrated brake channel can switch up to 0.5 A at 24 V DC, allowing an external holding brake to be energized or released in sync with movement. Motion resolution is determined by its encoder interface, which can process feedback signals up to 400,000 increments/s; this high count rate preserves positioning accuracy at rapid traverse speeds. During acceleration, the power stage delivers a peak winding current of 2 × 5 A, while the supply for the motor coils may be as high as 48 V DC to increase dynamic torque. The device accepts single-ended incremental encoders, matching the needs of many economical stepper systems, and supports both unipolar and bipolar two-phase motors.
Continuous operation is rated for 2 × 3.5 A and is housed in an enclosure with protection rated at IP65/66/67, so the module withstands dust and high-pressure water on the machine frame. Communication occurs over EtherCAT through two 4-pin M8 sockets that enable simple daisy-chain wiring, while the motor windings terminate on a 5-pin M12 connector. The M8 network ports draw only 120 mA from the upstream supply, keeping load on the bus low. Internally, the module executes a 64-fold micro-stepping pattern for smoother motion at low speeds. Mechanical dimensions of 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm permit installation in tight spaces alongside other IP-rated boxes.
