The EP7041-1002 is produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. It functions as a decentralized EtherCAT stepper motor interface that mounts directly in the machine envelope, eliminating the need for a protective cabinet. By combining motor power, feedback handling, and basic I/O in a single compact housing, the unit drives two-phase stepper motors while simultaneously collecting local binary signals for higher-level motion sequences. This arrangement helps reduce separate wiring runs between the controller, the motor, and nearby sensors on compact automation stations.
The module communicates via the real-time fieldbus EtherCAT, allowing deterministic position updates between the drive and the controller. Each motor channel is energized through a symmetrical driver stage built from a 2 × H-bridge, so either unipolar or bipolar coils can be selected in software. Motor supply voltage is supported up to 48 V DC, a range suited to many low-to-medium torque stepper platforms used in pick-and-place systems, lab automation, or small gantry axes. During acceleration, the electronics can source a peak phase current of 2 × 1.5 A, after which the output settles to the rated continuous level for sustained operation. Command pulses arrive at frequencies up to 32,000 full steps/s, giving the drive enough bandwidth to run high-resolution motion profiles while maintaining synchronized control with the upstream system.
Two onboard digital channels provide local start, limit, or homing references, and the unit therefore includes 2 digital inputs. When an incremental encoder is attached, the circuitry accepts feedback edges up to 400,000 increments/s, which supports stable position monitoring on geared or finely stepped axes. All internal electronics are powered from the control rail and draw only 120 mA, which helps limit added thermal load in tightly packed machine sections. The encapsulated aluminum body measures 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, so multiple modules can be placed close together without consuming much installation space. Its machine-mounted format also keeps the drive near the actuator, which can simplify routing for short motor and sensor connections.
