Product Description:
The EP6224-2022 module is produced by Beckhoff as part of the EP Digital Input Modules series. Designed for machine-level installation, the unit converts sensor and actuator states into EtherCAT data and forwards them over a single network cable. By combining digital input and output points in a sealed housing, it reduces cabinet space and brings I/O closer to the process, allowing controllers to monitor switches, proximity sensors, and indicator lamps without long parallel wiring runs. Its role in industrial automation is decentralized field expansion of PLC systems operating under real-time Ethernet.
The module communicates through two M8, 4-pin, A-coded, shielded bus sockets that daisy-chain directly onto the EtherCAT segment, and it synchronizes events because the device supports distributed clocks. Four Class A ports terminate at M12 socket connectors, and each port carries both input and output lines so the total channel count is 4 x DI/DO. Housing dimensions of 60 mm x 126 mm x 26.5 mm allow installation on narrow machine frames. For each port, the L+ supply can deliver 1.4 A, permitting direct operation of small solenoids and indicator loads, while the logic circuits are powered from a nominal 24 V DC field supply.
Total load capacity is limited by a trunk current of 4.0 A, and each C/Q signal conductor may source up to 200 mA for external devices that require higher drive levels. The sealed zinc housing is rated IP65/IP66/IP67, so it withstands dust ingress and high-pressure water during washdown cleaning. A 4-pin M8 connector feeds the L+ and 0 V rails, matching the rest of the power distribution on the line. The I/O wiring may extend to a maximum of 20 m between the module and the sensor, allowing flexible placement without violating signal timing on the distributed clock network.
