Product Description:
The EP6002-0002 is a serial communication interface module produced by Beckhoff for decentralized EtherCAT installations. It connects serial devices to an EtherCAT network, allowing controllers to exchange data with peripherals mounted directly on the machine. With a housing footprint of 30 mm × 126 mm × 26.5 mm, the module can be installed close to field devices, and its integrated power feed supports clean daisy-chain layouts in distributed control architectures. This layout reduces long point-to-point serial cable runs and keeps signal conversion at the machine instead of in a central cabinet.
The electronics are supplied from the fieldbus with a nominal voltage of 24 V DC. Under this supply the unit draws only 130 mA, so multiple modules can share a single low-current branch. At the same time, a separate feed-through path delivers up to 4 A to downstream devices, maintaining sensor power continuity along the line. Serial data is transmitted at up to 115,200 baud with less than 3% bit distortion, supporting stable communication with connected devices. When the RS422 or RS485 wiring mode is selected, the signal can travel as far as 1000 m without repeaters, which suits long conveyor lines and other wide machine layouts. Each channel also provides a stabilized 5 V, 20 mA supply, reducing the need for separate auxiliary sensor power at the connection point.
The module supports RS232, RS422, and RS485 communication through a 5-pin a-coded M12 socket. Data exchange occurs in full-duplex mode, preventing bus turnaround delays during command-response cycles. For network wiring, the EtherCAT segment enters and exits through two shielded four-pin M8 sockets, enabling straightforward daisy-chain topologies. The shielded connectors help maintain reliable communication where electrical noise from nearby motors and drives is present. These connector choices let the module bridge serial devices directly into an EtherCAT backbone without separate conversion hardware.
