Beckhoff manufactures the EP5151-0002 as part of its EP Digital Input Modules series. The device is a decentralized input block that records differential signals from incremental encoders and forwards them over the EtherCAT fieldbus. By bringing the sensor interface directly onto the machine frame, it reduces cabinet wiring and enables distributed acquisition of high-speed position data required for synchronous motion control in packaging, material-handling, and assembly equipment. This layout shortens the distance between the encoder and the I/O interface, which helps preserve signal quality on moving machine sections.
Beneath its overmolded housing, the module hosts a single input channel, so one encoder is mapped to the controller at a time. Communication with the network controller is handled through the EtherCAT protocol, while back-to-back cabling is possible using the 2 x M8 socket, 4-pin, A-coded, shielded bus connectors. The front end is designed for a 100 kHz cutoff frequency, allowing reliable counting at high shaft speeds. Electrical levels conform to HTL (push-pull) conventions, and both the single-ended input and the encoder supply share a regulated 24 V DC rail. The signal reaches the logic through a push-pull stage that presents the required load impedance without extra termination components.
The module has an IP65/IP66/IP67 protection rating and a PA6 polyamide body that withstands oils and vibration. Power for the sensing electronics can deliver up to 0.5 A, routed to the feedback device through an M12 socket, 8-pin port, which supports the incremental encoder used on the channel. Position information is resolved with a 4-fold evaluation quadrature decoder, and an internal latch captures the zero pulse with 16-bit resolution for homing routines. The compact size of 30 x 126 x 26.5 mm permits installation alongside other IP67 modules on machine tooling without increasing enclosure depth.
