The EP5101-1002 is a single-channel EtherCAT input module designed by Beckhoff for the EP Digital Input Modules series. It captures incremental encoder feedback and transmits position data to higher-level motion controllers, enabling tight synchronization in industrial automation lines. By combining fieldbus communication, power distribution, and signal conditioning in one compact housing, the module supports decentralized installation near the sensor. Mounting the interface close to the encoder also helps reduce long feedback runs that can introduce noise or signal loss in larger machines.

Communication takes place over EtherCAT, so the module can use distributed clocks for precise alignment with drive axes and other synchronized devices on the network. A maximum counting rate of 1 MHz permits connection of high-speed rotary or linear encoders without missed edges during rapid motion. External sensors receive power from the dedicated encoder supply of 24 V DC / 0.5 A, which removes the need for a separate local source for the feedback device. Network connections are routed through two M8 sockets that carry bus signals and auxiliary voltage in a daisy-chain layout. Internally, the quadrature decoder performs 4-fold evaluation, so each pulse sequence is processed with increased positional granularity.

The encoder connects through an 8-pin M12 socket interface that accepts RS422 differential or TTL single-ended signals from incremental feedback devices. Its slim housing measures just 26.5 mm in depth and 126 mm in height, while the width remains 30 mm for installation in narrow machine spaces. The enclosure is molded from PA6, which provides chemical resistance and an electrically insulating outer shell for the internal electronics. This layout allows the module to be mounted close to actuators, transfer position signals reliably, and fit into applications where cabinet space is limited or unavailable.
