The EP3356-0022 is a compact EtherCAT I/O device produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. The module provides two strain-gauge measurement channels and brings full-bridge sensor signals directly into a control network, allowing machine controllers to monitor force, weight, or tension values without separate amplifiers. Its sealed housing and field-ready connectors let it mount close to tooling, minimizing analog line length and maintaining measurement fidelity in demanding automation environments. This arrangement lets the controller process low-level bridge signals near the machine, which helps preserve signal quality where vibration and electrical noise are present.
The module is powered from a field supply of 24 V DC and draws only 120 mA, keeping cabinet power budgets low. Each channel samples its bridge in 4-wire topology through an internal 24-bit converter, and fresh data can be delivered to the PLC every 100 µs, so dynamic weighing processes are not limited by I/O latency. A 10 kHz low-pass input filter suppresses high-frequency noise that might originate on load cell leads. Communication to the EtherCAT ring is carried on two M8, 4-pin A-coded ports that support line or daisy-chain wiring, while process signals arrive through a separate M12, 5-pin connector. The internal sensor excitation allows compatible bridges to be connected directly, which simplifies integration when the module is installed near the measurement point.
In the field, wiring practices are simplified by a maximum sensor current of 350 mA, sufficient for two parallel load cells before external excitation is required. Signal leads can extend up to 30 m without accuracy loss, matching typical machine lengths. Safety margins are increased by the module’s 500 V channel-to-bus separation, and the resulting galvanic isolation prevents ground loops when multiple platforms share the same EtherCAT segment. Because the module can sit close to the sensor location, cable routing through moving machine sections can be reduced and measurement wiring can remain more manageable.
