Product Description:
The EP3204-0002 is a temperature-capable digital input module produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. Mounted directly on machinery, it links resistance-type sensors to an EtherCAT network so a PLC can read precise process values without a control-cabinet terminal strip. The module supplies sensor power internally and converts field signals into synchronized bus data for decentralized industrial automation tasks that need compact, panel-free I/O.
Supply to the internal electronics comes from a 24 VDC US supply line and draws 120 mA, keeping power demand modest even in dense installations. Each input is sampled by a 16-bit converter, yielding fine electrical resolution over the resistance span up to 4095 Ω. Because measuring current is limited to 0.5 mA, self-heating of connected RTDs is negligible. The channels share a common isolated ground that breaks earth loops, and they accept 2-, 3-, or 4-wire circuits for flexible lead-resistance compensation. Sensor heads plug into four M12, 5-pin sockets, while two shielded, A-coded M8 connectors form the EtherCAT in-and-out interface, enabling daisy-chain topology without additional switches. This topology means additional terminals and junction boxes are unnecessary, reducing wiring time and potential points of failure.
Temperature granularity reaches 0.01 °C per least significant bit, and total system deviation stays within ±0.5 K, fitting process loops that require tight thermal control. The module handles 4 inputs, and each sensor can sit up to 30 m away without loss of accuracy. Its enclosure measures 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, allowing installation on narrow machine frames, and the PA6 polyamide housing withstands oils and vibration encountered on the factory floor. With that cable reach, the module can be positioned close to the process while the PLC cabinet remains farther away from heat or vibration.
