The EP2816-0008 digital I/O block is produced by Beckhoff for the EP Digital Input Modules series. As a compact EtherCAT field device, it expands remote control panels with switchable outputs that distribute control power to actuators in machines, conveyors, and process stations. By mounting directly on machinery and daisy-chaining to other EtherCAT nodes, it reduces cabinet wiring and shortens response paths in distributed automation. This arrangement places the output stage near the load, which helps reduce long home-run cables and keeps field connections localized on the machine.

Each of the 16 channels can switch ohmic, inductive, or lamp loads while sourcing up to 0.5 A apiece; in aggregate the module delivers 4 A through its 25-pin D-sub output connector. Internal electronic fusing trips at 1.5 A to protect against short circuits, and power is distributed at a regulated 24 V DC level so downstream devices receive a uniform supply. Turn-on propagation through the high-side switches is 60 µs, enabling responsive solenoid or indicator control, and a typical turn-off delay of 300 µs helps limit voltage transients on inductive loads. The EtherCAT protocol is carried over a dual, shielded 4-pin M8 interface, and a 120 mA draw from the sensor supply keeps network power budgets predictable. Distributed Clocks support deterministic edge alignment across multiple nodes.

Installation flexibility is aided by the maximum cable reach of 30 m between the module and actuators, letting the block sit close to tooling yet within enclosure boundaries. Physical dimensions of 30 mm × 126 mm × 26.5 mm fit shallow machine channels, and the cast housing offers protection suitable for wet or dusty work cells. The compact form factor also helps when the module must fit beside sensors, valves, or pneumatic manifolds on crowded equipment frames. Mounting the block near the load helps shorten wiring runs to field devices while keeping the distributed layout compact.
