Product Description:
Beckhoff manufactures the EP2339-0042 digital input/output module within the EP Digital Input Modules series. Designed for decentralized installation, the compact block integrates into EtherCAT topologies to gather sensor signals and drive low-power actuators directly on the machine. By combining input processing and output switching in a sealed enclosure, the unit streamlines I/O distribution in material handling cells, packaging stations, and other automated equipment where space and cable reduction are priorities. Its rugged polyamide housing has sealing that allows it to be mounted without a protective cabinet.
The module offers 16 digital channels, and each channel can be configured as an input or output through EtherCAT process data. Without connectors, the block measures 60 x 150 x 26.5 mm, so it occupies little panel depth even when installed side by side on a machine frame. A molded PA6 body and an enclosure rating of IP65/IP66/IP67 help prevent dust ingress and resist high-pressure water jets during washdown. Incoming signals pass through a debouncing stage with a 3 ms filter that suppresses contact chatter typical of mechanical sensors. Communication and power share a shielded, two-port bus interface made of 4-pin, D-coded M12 sockets, while field wiring is completed through eight 5-pin, A-coded M12 sockets. Consistent update times are supported by the EtherCAT protocol, which streams data in real time without added addressing overhead.
The output side supports up to 0.5 A per channel, and overload events are limited by a programmable electronic fuse that trips at a 1.9 A short-circuit threshold. For fast response, the drivers use 60 µs / 300 µs on and off switching times, enabling lamp, inductive, or purely resistive loads to follow rapid machine cycles. A cumulative sensor supply of 0.5 A is available from the internal 24 V rail, so external proximity sensors can be powered locally while respecting the module’s maximum network drop. With a permitted cable reach of 30 m, the block can be distributed along conveyors without violating signal integrity rules.
