Product Description:
The EP2338-1002 digital module is manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EP Digital Input Modules series. The unit serves as a compact field-level component that forwards discrete machine signals to higher-level control platforms over the EtherCAT network. By combining power distribution and signal acquisition inside a sealed housing, it simplifies cable runs and supports decentralized automation architectures on processing lines, packaging stations, and material handling cells. Because the housing combines these functions, the module can be mounted close to sensors and actuators instead of relying on a centralized I/O location.
The module provides 8 channels that can be configured as digital inputs or outputs, and each channel is referenced to a common 24 V DC load rail. Its logic section draws 120 mA, while the field supply passes through two integrated power groups inside the housing. Communication and power entry are handled through two 4-pin, A-coded, shielded M8 sockets, and field devices connect on the front through M12 × 1, 5-pin, A-coded connectors. An input filter of 3 ms is applied to every line so contact bounce is ignored, and the input current is limited to 6 mA. When the channels are used as outputs, each one is protected to 0.5 A per channel to help prevent wiring faults from spreading into the supply.
The total switched load is limited to 4 A across the module, and attached sensors can draw no more than 0.5 A total from the auxiliary supply. The housing is molded from PA6 polyamide and measures 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, which helps it fit in narrow cable trays or other tight mounting spaces. Its IP65/66/67 enclosure rating keeps out dust and water jets, and two 3.5 mm fixing holes support direct fastening to machine frames. The internal power bus routes energy to each channel without external jumpers. Communication uses EtherCAT for deterministic data exchange across daisy-chained modules.
