Beckhoff manufactures the EP Digital Input Modules series for decentralized EtherCAT I/O. The EP2338-1001 serves as an eight-channel input and auxiliary power distributor that lets controllers read field switches while energizing sensors, which helps simplify control cabinet wiring in industrial automation systems. Two M8 network sockets forward the bus signal along the machine, and the overmolded housing allows direct mounting on moving or stationary equipment without additional protective enclosures. Its IP67 sealing helps the module withstand oil mist and splashing coolant often present on production lines. This layout supports decentralized installation close to the sensors, which reduces long cable runs back to the cabinet.
The module provides 8 individually debounced input channels, and each channel is internally limited to an input current of 6 mA so proximity switches do not overload the sensor supply. Incoming edges pass through a 3.0 ms filter that suppresses contact bounce before the state is transferred via the EtherCAT fieldbus. Sensor power and load switching use a nominal voltage of 24 V DC delivered through the integrated supply pins. With dimensions of 30 x 126 x 26.5 mm, the device fits between conveyors without mechanical interference. A row of eight M8 signal sockets accepts cordsets, and two additional M8 bus sockets provide a daisy-chainable interface. Runs of up to 30 m are permitted between the module and connected sensors.
The enclosure is molded from PA6 (polyamide), which gives the housing impact resistance while keeping weight low for robot arm placement. The internal power distribution can feed sensors with up to 0.5 A per port, but the total load must stay below 4 A to avoid thermal shutdown. If a wiring fault occurs, the electronic protection limits fault current to 1.5 A, which helps clear short circuits without blowing external fuses. The electronics draw only 120 mA from the upstream 24 V supply, leaving power available for additional I/O nodes on the same branch. The material choice also supports machine-mounted use where compact size and durable construction are important.
