Product Description:
The EP2338-0002 is an EtherCAT I/O block manufactured by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. As an IP-rated field unit, it brings digital signal processing closer to the machine and reduces the amount of centralized sensor and actuator wiring. The module provides combined input and output channels for monitoring switches and proximity sensors while also driving solenoids and other 24 V field devices in industrial automation networks.
The block delivers a nominal output voltage of 24 V DC across 8 channels. Its inputs follow EN 61131-2 Type 1/3 electrical limits, which allows them to handle typical 24 V field levels and brief short circuits under normal operating conditions. Each output can source 0.5 A per channel, and the electronics switch off if the combined load exceeds 4 A. The housing carries IP65/IP66/IP67 protection, so it can be mounted directly on machinery where oil spray or washdown cleaning may occur. Logic power consumption is limited to 6 mA per input, and the internal 10 µs filter reduces contact bounce before data is transmitted on the network. Switching edges appear after 50 µs during turn-on and 100 µs during turn-off, which helps maintain predictable timing for valves, lamps, and similar field devices.
Network wiring is handled through 2 × M8 shielded sockets that pass EtherCAT to the next node, while sensors and actuators connect through separate M12, 5-pin A-coded connectors. Cable runs to the control cabinet can reach 30 m without reducing signal quality, and the module provides a total sensor supply current of 0.5 A. Its compact housing measures 30 mm × 126 mm × 26.5 mm, which helps when space is limited on tooling or machine frames. The electronics draw only 120 mA from the upstream supply, keeping the load on the auxiliary 24 V rail relatively low during operation.
