Internal Product Review
The EP2318-0002 is a Beckhoff EtherCAT digital I/O module with 4 input channels and 4 output channels. A 24 V DC output stage and 4 A total output current give the unit solid capability for distributed machine signals. Fast 10 µs input filtering is a standout detail for clean, responsive signal handling.

Product Description:
The EP2318-0002 distributed I/O block is produced by Beckhoff as part of the EP Digital Input Modules series. Designed for installation directly on the machine, this module combines digital sensing and actuation on a single EtherCAT segment, giving controllers access to four inputs and four high-side switches. By placing signal conversion next to the field devices, the unit reduces cabinet wiring and brings deterministic response times to industrial conveyors, packaging stations, and material-handling cells.
The communication layer is handled through a 2 x M8, 4-pin, A-coded, shielded bus interface that carries both EtherCAT signals and power. On this network, the module appears as a slave that communicates over EtherCAT, so cyclic data is transferred within microseconds of each controller cycle. Each of the four input channels is debounced in hardware by a 10 µs filter, and every sensor wired to the five-pin M12 connectors draws only 6 mA from the terminal. The output side provides four channels that switch loads up to 24 V DC. Per-channel sourcing capability reaches 0.5 A, making it suitable for contactors, indicator lamps, or small pneumatic valves. Dedicated process data objects report wire-break and short-circuit states to the PLC.
All outputs share an aggregate limit of 4 A that is monitored internally. If a branch exceeds the allowable 1.5 A short-circuit current, the channel is switched off. The integrated sensor supply eliminates the need for external power rails. The housing measures 30 mm in width, 26.5 mm in depth, and 126 mm in height, so it fits easily between other IP67 modules on a machine frame. Four M12 sockets form the signal connection field, while the sealed enclosure supports reliable operation in washdown areas. This low sensor burden helps maintain stable signaling during long duty cycles, and input loading remains minimal at 6 mA.
