Beckhoff’s EP Digital Input Modules series includes the EP2316-0008, which integrates eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs in a compact field-mountable housing. Designed for machine building, it captures sensor states and actuates devices directly at the source, so signal lines remain short and diagnostic LEDs stay beside the process. The module attaches to moving gantries, tooling plates, or protection fences and relays real-time data to the controller over a single network cable, helping maintain clean control cabinets. Mounting I/O near the process also reduces long wiring runs back to the cabinet and keeps signal indication close to the connected devices.

The module exchanges data over EtherCAT using two shielded M8 A-coded sockets that form the bus interface. Its 8 inputs + 8 outputs support decentralized architectures by combining sensing and actuation in one node. Each input satisfies Type 3 of EN 61131-2, drawing 6 mA at 24 V, and is debounced by a 10 µs filter to prevent false transitions. Field signals arrive through a 25-pin D-sub connector secured with UNC4-40 threads, while the permitted cable length of 30 m keeps propagation delay predictable. Control voltage is supplied at a nominal 24 V DC, allowing the device to share power rails with standard control components.

The output stage sources up to 0.5 A per channel with an aggregate limit of 4 A, so small solenoids or indicator lamps can be driven without extra relays. A 0.5 A sensor supply is available for proximity switches and light curtains. Outputs energize within 60 µs and release after 300 µs, enabling sub-millisecond sequencing in pick-and-place systems. Environmental sealing rated at IP65/IP66/IP67 protects the potted electronics against dust, low-pressure water jets, and short-term immersion, permitting installation on moving machine parts subject to washdown and vibration.
