Product Description:
The EP2028-0032 is a field-mountable digital I/O block produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. Although it is grouped with input modules, this variant provides digital output functionality through eight 24 V DC switching channels that let an EtherCAT controller actuate devices directly on the machine. Its sealed metal housing supports decentralized installation close to sensors and valves, shortening wiring runs and simplifying layout in industrial automation cells. This arrangement places switching functions near the load instead of in a remote cabinet, which can simplify machine wiring and reduce voltage drop across long cable runs.
Each of the 8 M12 sockets can source up to 2.8 A per channel, allowing the module to drive inductive loads such as pneumatic valves or contactors without external relays. When all channels are active, the combined load must stay below 16 A at 40 °C, which protects the internal distribution and matches the permitted US sum current. Communication is handled over EtherCAT, so process data updates remain deterministic with each network cycle. The housing is rated IP65/IP66/IP67, so it is dust-tight and resists low-pressure water jets as well as temporary immersion. Isolation between sensor ground and power ground helps reduce cross-coupled noise during operation.
Two 2 × M8 socket, 4-pin, A-coded, shielded connectors serve as the EtherCAT in and out ports, while the outputs use 8 × M12 socket, 5-pin, A-coded receptacles that lock with standard sensor cables. A 7/8 in., 5-pin plug rated 16-UN brings supply power into the block, and GND-S/GND-P isolation keeps the logic reference separate from the load ground. The compact aluminum housing measures 60 × 150 × 26.5 mm, which helps it fit narrow cable trays or robotic arms. For low-power indicators or sensors, the internal auxiliary rail can deliver up to 0.5 A total without affecting the main channel budget.
