Product Description:
The EP1908-0002 is a digital input module produced by Beckhoff as part of the EP Digital Input Modules series. The unit captures sensor states in distributed machine sections and forwards them through EtherCAT, allowing cabinet-free installation directly on the equipment. It handles safety-related signals, so it acts as a hardened interface between field devices and higher-level controllers in industrial automation. Encapsulated electronics and over-molded connectors simplify assembly on moving tooling, reducing wiring runs and maintaining deterministic I/O timing for motion, packaging, and material-handling cells.
The module operates from a stable control voltage of 24 VDC and routes field signals through a 2 x M8, 4-pin, A-coded, shielded bus interface. Eight discrete channels are available, and each accepts PNP sensors or dry contacts, so the unit provides 8 individually timestamped inputs to the controller. The enclosure meets IP65/IP66/IP67, allowing wash-down installation without additional boxes. Input edges can be evaluated with a granularity of 0.1 Hz, which is suitable for slow limit switches as well as low-frequency proximity devices. The PA6-F housing withstands vibration, and the single I/O connection uses an M12, 5-pin plug. Each M8 port carries up to 4 A while the clock output is limited to 15 mA, and isolation is verified with a 500 VDC test.
Inside the compact body measuring 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, TwinSAFE circuitry integrates the TwinSAFE/Safety over EtherCAT protocol, so safe inputs and standard inputs share one network segment. The device maps its data to the controller through a 6 B In / 6 B Out process image, reducing variable handling overhead. For dynamic test pulses, the switching elements generate an OSSD pulse of 350 µs Max to verify external wiring integrity without affecting machine cycle time. A polyurethane sealing compound fills the internal cavities to block moisture and provide strain relief around the PCB and connector pins.
