Product Description:
Beckhoff manufactures the EP1816-1008 as a member of its EP Digital Input Modules series. The unit is a compact I/O block intended for decentralized installation on machines, where it converts discrete sensor states into fieldbus data for the control system. By placing the module directly on the equipment, wiring is simplified and cabinet space is saved in industrial automation cells, while sensor leads can remain short in distributed machine sections.
The module accepts a 24 V DC nominal supply, matching the control voltage commonly used for sensors and actuators. Internally, the sixteen input circuits are arranged as 16 digital inputs, and each M12 port carries 2 channels per socket, allowing two separate sensors to share one connector. Signal wiring is realized through the rugged 8 x M12 connectors, which are 5-pin and A-coded to maintain pin compatibility across Beckhoff’s IP67 lineup. Input states conform to EN 61131-2 Type 3, so current-sourcing and sinking devices within the stated voltage thresholds are correctly recognized.
The module communicates over the EtherCAT interface, and its circuitry is synchronized through distributed clocks to microsecond accuracy for deterministic input sampling. Each input passes through a 3.0 ms input filter, which suppresses contact bounce so that only stable transitions reach the controller. Sensors connected to the ports can draw up to 0.5 A sensor supply in total from the integrated power distribution. The housing carries an IP65/66/67 enclosure classification, enabling direct mounting on tooling or conveyors exposed to dust, cutting fluid, and low-pressure washdown without external protective enclosures. This timing allows multiple EP modules to latch inputs simultaneously across the network when events must be captured in the same machine cycle.
