The EP1816-0008 is a digital input module from Beckhoff in the EP Digital Input Modules series. Intended for decentralized installations, the unit acquires binary sensor signals and transmits them over EtherCAT to higher-level controllers. Housed in a compact metal body, it combines field wiring, power distribution, and network connectivity in a single enclosure for industrial automation. This close-to-machine layout helps reduce separate junction hardware and keeps signal collection near the sensing devices.

With 16 channels, the module can accept parallel status information from multiple limit switches, proximity sensors, or pushbuttons. Each input is designed for industrial 24-volt circuits, and the module operates on a nominal bus voltage of 24 VDC while meeting Type 3 requirements in EN 61131-2. A hardware filter of 10 µs suppresses contact bounce and short spikes before the state is forwarded to the EtherCAT network. Network attachment uses two M8 sockets, 4-pin, A-coded, shielded connectors for daisy-chained EtherCAT cabling, while the internal supply rail can deliver up to 4 A to the electronics and sensor power terminals. The slim housing supports installation on tight machine frames where cabinet space is limited.

The enclosure carries a protection classification of IP65/IP66/IP67, so it resists dust ingress, water jets, and temporary immersion without additional housings. A D-sub 25-pin signal connector simplifies multi-conductor wiring, and the EtherCAT Distributed Clocks feature supports time-stamped edge detection for synchronized motion or measurement tasks. For extended machine layouts, sensor lines may reach up to 30 m without compromising state recognition, and the integrated sensor power output supplies up to 0.5 A at the field voltage. Each input draws 6 mA, which keeps overall loading low on the available sensor supply.
