The EP1518-0002 digital input module is produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. Designed for machine control, it brings field-level digital sensing into an EtherCAT network so a controller can monitor limit switches, proximity sensors, or light curtains without local I/O racks. The housing is sealed for installation on conveyors, assembly cells, or robotic end-effectors where distributed modules shorten cable runs and reduce panel space.
It accepts a nominal input voltage of 24 V DC so standard control power supplies can feed the circuitry. The 8 channels are grouped on four M12 sockets to simplify sensor clustering. Each channel follows the EN 61131-2 Type 3 switching standard, meaning it can recognize both sourcing and sinking signals. At the input side, only 3 mA is drawn, which minimizes load on sensor outputs and allows long cable runs. For pulse detection tasks, the integrated counter hardware records edges up to 1 kHz, enabling direct machine speed or part count measurements without separate counters.
Two channels can operate as event counters, each with a 32-bit width, so more than four billion increments are possible before rollover. A configurable digital filter of 150 µs suppresses switch bounce, which helps prevent false counts on mechanical contacts. Power distribution inside the block is handled by a control supply that can carry up to 4 A, while individual sensor power pins deliver up to 0.5 A for every group of four inputs, reducing the need for external distribution strips. Time-synchronous acquisition through the Distributed Clocks function maintains microsecond alignment across multiple modules, and the two M8 EtherCAT connections support network links in distributed layouts. Physical dimensions of 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm allow placement alongside other blocks without exceeding typical cable tray widths.
