The EP1098-0001 is a compact digital input block manufactured by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. As an EtherCAT-enabled I/O node, it installs directly on machine frames and acquires binary sensor states for deterministic transfer to the central controller. The module is intended for decentralized installations that do not use control cabinets, and its input channels let proximity switches, mechanical contacts, and light curtains be recorded close to the process while sharing a distributed sensor power rail. Mounting the I/O point close to the sensors reduces long parallel signal runs and keeps field wiring localized around the machine section being monitored.
With housing dimensions of 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, the unit occupies little space beside other IP67 devices. Fieldbus traffic passes through an EtherCAT feed-through that uses two 4-pin M8 sockets, and the shielded design maintains up to 500 V of electrical separation between the bus circuitry and protective earth. A-coded, 3-pin M8 sockets bring in the input lines, and each channel draws only 3 mA from its sensor. A debounce filter of 10 µs is integrated so fast edges are not distorted. This short filter delay is useful when the application must detect rapid state changes without the longer response times found in heavily filtered input modules. Because there is no ground isolation, the inputs share the module reference potential, which simplifies wiring in metal machines.
Power arrives through a dedicated M8, 4-pin supply connector, and line sets can extend to 30 m without impairing signal integrity. The built-in sensor feed delivers up to 0.5 A per block, while the aggregate module current must stay below 4 A. Both Up and Us rails run at 24 VDC. The design follows a ground-switching principle that returns the sensor line through the module rather than interrupting the positive lead. This arrangement keeps the supply path continuous and supports remote signal collection in valve terminals, small tooling stations, and mobile equipment.
