Product Description:
Beckhoff’s EP1018-0002 is a digital input module in the EP Digital Input Modules series. Mounted directly on machinery, it collects 24 VDC sensor signals and transfers them over EtherCAT, eliminating the need for a protected control cabinet. The unit integrates limit switches, photo-eyes, and other discrete devices into distributed automation architectures. This arrangement keeps I/O close to the process and reduces the amount of field wiring routed back to a cabinet. It relies on sealed connectors and a cast housing so it can function in washdown or welding zones without additional enclosures.
The module supplies 8 discrete channels that follow Type 3 per EN 61131-2, meaning each input presents only 3 mA of load to the connected sensor. A hardware filter of 10 µs is included to reduce mechanical bounce while keeping cycle times short. Electrical separation between field circuitry and the EtherCAT interface withstands 500 V. The cast housing carries a rating of IP65/IP66/IP67, so exposure to dust, oil spray, or high-pressure water does not impair operation. Two independent 24 VDC supplies are provided: Up energizes the input electronics and may deliver up to 4 A, while Us feeds the internal bus components with the same current limit. A dedicated 24 VDC sensor feed provides 0.5 A for proximity switches or optical transmitters wired to each socket.
Measuring 30 × 126 × 26.5 mm, the compact block fastens to a machine frame with minimal footprint, and the EtherCAT segment can extend over field cabling up to 30 m without repeaters. Sensor lines terminate on 4 x M12 A-coded, 5-pin connectors that carry both signal and auxiliary power, which simplifies wiring. Network continuity is maintained by daisy-chaining through 2 x M8 shielded plugs, allowing additional Beckhoff EP modules to be added inline. All copper layers and connector contacts are sized for the 24 VDC, 4 A power budget, helping maintain stable voltage when every input is actuated at the same time.
