Internal Product Review

The EP-M845B is a Beckhoff EP digital input module designed around an Intel Pentium 4 target CPU with onboard graphic support. Hardware supervision is especially well executed through the Winbond W83627HF monitor IC and monitoring for 3 fans. Comprehensive voltage monitoring across key supply rails stands out as a valuable diagnostic feature.

Product Description:

The EP-M845B is a field-installed digital input and monitoring module produced by Beckhoff within the EP Digital Input Modules series. Designed for cabinet-free IP-rated installations near machinery, it gathers thermal, voltage, and fan telemetry from an embedded control computer so that TwinCAT or any higher-level PLC can react to overheating, supply deviations, or cooling failures in real time. In an automation cell, the module links environmental data to the EtherCAT network, allowing the control program to initiate orderly shutdowns or alarm outputs before component limits are crossed.

Processor temperature is derived directly from the Pentium Thermal Diode, giving the module a sensor path that reflects junction heat instead of relying on external board probes. All measurement channels are multiplexed by the Winbond W83627HF hardware-monitor IC, and this chip converts analog signals for digital transmission to the fieldbus. A separate board reference labeled TR1 records ambient system temperature so the controller can compare package heat against enclosure air. The target host platform is an Intel Pentium 4, so the module interprets diode coefficients and VID codes specific to that processor family. Voltage supervision covers rails such as +12V, Vccp1, Vtt, +3.3 V, +5 V, -12 V, and -5 V, allowing detection of undervoltage or overvoltage events that may damage drives or I/O. The module also provides 4 external fan outputs that motherboard firmware can modulate through PWM signals originating from the monitor IC.

Airflow supervision uses three tachometer channels: Fan 1 (CPU) protects the processor cooler, Fan 2 (PWR) validates power-supply ventilation, and Fan 3 (Chassis) reports overall cabinet airflow. Each channel converts pulse frequency to revolutions per minute and can trigger an interrupt if speed drops below a set limit. An additional header supports an unmonitored fourth fan for optional expansion.
