The EM2042 digital output terminal is produced by Beckhoff as part of the EM Terminal Modules series. The module adds discrete switching outputs to an EtherCAT system, allowing a controller to drive machine actuators or indicator circuits directly from a compact terminal. Installed beside other I/O terminals, it draws its logic power from the internal E-bus and simplifies panel wiring by concentrating output channels in one enclosure bay. In automated equipment, this function reduces field wiring and simplifies system setup.
Its output section provides 16 individually controlled channels, each rated for 0.5 A of continuous output current so that small relays, valves, or pilot lights can be energized without external interposing relays. The common supply rail accepts a nominal 24 VDC load voltage, keeping wiring consistent with standard control circuits. Channel currents are aggregated by the terminal, but internal copper tracks limit the simultaneous draw to 4 A, protecting both the module and upstream fusing. Process data are transferred over the EtherCAT frame as a 16-bit output word, giving the controller direct access to every channel with one write operation. The housing snaps onto a 35 mm mounting rail, allowing the terminal to be added to a cabinet without drilling new mounting holes.
The housing carries an IP20 protection rating, so it is intended for use inside a closed control cabinet where access and debris intrusion are controlled. Conformal-coated circuitry tolerates up to 95% relative humidity when no condensation forms, supporting deployment in humid packaging or beverage-processing areas. All load conductors leave the module through a front-mounted 25-pin D-Sub socket, while a two-pole clamp supplies the power rail. Because the electronics receive power through the E-bus, no separate logic connector is required. The module supports a variable installation position, and the output stage can switch resistive, inductive, or lamp loads. An input process width of 0 bits indicates that the terminal contributes only output data to the EtherCAT process image.
