The ELM3704-1001 is an analog measurement terminal from Beckhoff belonging to the ELM EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for installation on an EtherCAT I/O station, the unit acquires precise sensor data and forwards it to the controller in real time. By accepting thermocouple or low-level voltage signals on four differential input channels, the module provides temperature and general analog acquisition in distributed industrial automation systems. Its format suits compact terminal assemblies where measurement points are placed close to the process and linked to the PLC through the EtherCAT network.
Each input is digitized by a delta-sigma converter that offers 24-bit resolution, allowing low-noise measurement even on millivolt ranges. The converter outputs are delivered to the EtherCAT core at a 10 ksps sampling rate, while an oversampling process inside the terminal runs at an 8 Msps internal sample rate to improve linearity and reduce aliasing. Signal bandwidth is limited first by a 30 kHz hardware low-pass cutoff in front of the ADC and then by a programmable digital filter whose fixed transition frequency is 2.6 kHz ADC low-pass cutoff. A filter ramp-up time of 300 µs indicates how quickly the channel reaches its final attenuation characteristics after configuration changes. In current mode, the input resistance is 150 Ω, and compensated functions automatically linearize thermocouple inputs.
Galvanic separation between the measurement section and the communication backplane is rated at 707 V DC isolation, protecting downstream electronics when field potentials fluctuate. The module draws 890 mA E-bus current during operation and dissipates 3 W thermal power, which affects power loading and cabinet heat buildup. A 6-pin push-in spring-loaded connector simplifies sensor wiring at elevations up to 2000 m. The enclosure has IP20 protection, so it must be mounted inside a control panel. This arrangement helps the terminal handle both temperature monitoring and other low-level analog signals without requiring separate conditioning hardware.
