Product Description:

The ELM3502-0000 is an analog measurement terminal manufactured by Beckhoff within the ELM EtherCAT Terminals series. It snaps into a standard EtherCAT I/O station and provides two differential input channels so that voltage, strain-gauge, or other sensor signals can be digitized close to the machine. Bringing conversion to the field reduces noise on long cable runs and lets the controller capture fast process changes without external signal conditioners.

The module performs conversion with a Delta-Sigma ADC that yields a high-precision, 24-bit result for every sample. Internally, the modulator oversamples each channel at 8 Msps and then decimates the stream to an application-level period of 50 µs, equivalent to 20 ksps, so deterministic data can be published on the EtherCAT bus. Electrical safety between the sensor side and the backplane is maintained by 707 V DC channel-to-E-bus isolation. The front-end supports 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, or 6-wire connection layouts, allowing full, half, and quarter bridge topologies. A programmable input filter reaches its final attenuation in 150 µs, and a fixed post-ADC low-pass provides a –3 dB corner at 5.3 kHz to constrain alias components before data export.

The differential amplifier tolerates up to ±40 V when no sensor supply is used and ±36 V when an external bridge supply is present. For active strain bridges, the terminal can source up to 21 mA of excitation current, matching quarter-bridge nominal resistances of 120 Ω, 350 Ω, or 1000 Ω. Signal conditioning begins with a pre-ADC anti-alias stage whose –3 dB point is at 30 kHz, aligning with the oversampling profile described above. Once the filter enables, the specified ramp-up time ensures the channel settles before acquisition. The housing carries a IP20 rating, so the terminal is intended for installation inside a protected control cabinet rather than exposed environments.
