The ELM3004-0000 is an EtherCAT measurement terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the ELM EtherCAT Terminals series. It integrates four precision analog input channels directly into the fieldbus, allowing a controller to collect high-speed, synchronized data from sensors or transducers. By eliminating external data acquisition hardware, the module streamlines installation and supports deterministic sampling for machine diagnostics, end-of-line testing, and other industrial automation tasks.
The terminal digitizes each signal with a resolution of 24 bits, so small variations in sensor output are preserved. Its internal converter operates at 8 Msps, providing oversampling headroom for the digital filters that follow. A low-pass stage begins attenuation at 2.6 kHz, and after decimation, each differential channel transmits data to the PLC at 10 ksps. The step response settles within 300 µs, meeting control-loop demands where rapid convergence is required. All four inputs are converted simultaneously, ensuring phase alignment across the measured signals. Eleven selectable measuring ranges accommodate various voltage or current levels. The four differential inputs use a two-wire connection scheme, and there is no isolation between channels to minimize path skew.
An additional analog front end can be switched in for wideband operation, and its unattenuated passband extends to 30 kHz for transient capture. The module draws approximately 470 mA from the E-bus. The backplane interface is insulated from the field wiring up to 707 V DC, and the same insulation rating applies between the signal ground and the bus. Typical thermal dissipation is 3 W, so enclosure airflow must handle the resulting heat. The module has an IP20 protection rating, restricting its use to closed control cabinets with limited exposure to dust and moisture.
