The EL6731-0000 is a PROFIBUS master terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed in an EtherCAT station, it converts the internal E-bus communication to a dedicated PROFIBUS DP/DP-V1/DP-V2/MC network so PLC software can interact with conventional slaves. The module controls a single fieldbus channel, assumes the master role, and provides a process image of 1.4 kbyte in and 1.4 kbyte out, ensuring deterministic data exchange between the higher-level controller and distributed devices.
The PROFIBUS link is presented on a 1 × D-Sub, 9-pin socket, and the terminal can supervise up to 125 slaves, each exchanging as much as 244 bytes of cyclic data. A selectable baud rate up to 12 Mbit/s allows the engineer to match cable length and timing requirements, while the EtherCAT side can service new frames every 200 µs, keeping overall cycle time short for fast motion or safety tasks. Power for the protocol controller and associated logic is supplied exclusively through the E-bus backplane, eliminating separate wiring. With an enclosure rated IP20, the device must be mounted in a control cabinet but does not require special gasketing.
Physically, the terminal occupies only 26 × 100 × 52 mm of panel space and clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail for quick replacement during service. Its mass is just 70 g, so it adds minimal load to large I/O assemblies and places little stress on the rail latch over vibration cycles. Operation is permitted in humidities up to 95% without condensation, enabling use in process environments where cabinet conditioning may be limited. The single fieldbus channel, master functionality, and 1.4 kbyte process image remain unchanged regardless of data rate, ensuring deterministic mapping even when every slave transmits the full 244-byte payload.
