The EK9000 is an Ethernet-based coupler produced by Beckhoff as part of the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. Support for the Modbus TCP/UDP protocol lets the device exchange process data with PLCs, SCADA nodes, or embedded PCs without proprietary drivers. This makes it a practical option for distributed I/O where standard Ethernet communication is preferred, including machines that use remote terminals to gather sensor signals and switch actuators across a cabinet or production cell.

The coupler operates at 100 Mbit/s full-duplex Ethernet over two RJ45 ports, and an autocrossing function removes the need for crossover cables. Up to 255 EtherCAT terminals can be appended, and the internal real-time engine handles a cumulative process image of 1440 bytes of I/O. A stabilized input of 24 VDC powers the logic, while thermal design limits dissipation to 3 W. One USB port provides service access, and diagnostic LEDs show link and run status. Autocrossing together with full-duplex negotiation helps preserve network bandwidth across the segment and simplifies cable placement. Low power loss keeps heat rise modest during normal operation, which supports stable communication between the coupler and connected terminals.
