The EK3100 is a fieldbus coupler produced by Beckhoff within the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It links an EtherCAT terminal segment to a higher-level control network so remote I/O on the terminal side can be integrated into distributed automation layouts without a separate controller at every station. This arrangement is useful when a machine or process section already relies on PROFIBUS communication but still needs the modular terminal density and layout flexibility of EtherCAT I/O slices. By translating cyclic process data between the connected systems, the coupler lets Beckhoff terminal blocks appear as conventional field devices to the upstream control architecture.

The unit communicates over PROFIBUS DP and supports data rates up to 12 Mbit/s, making it suitable for both standard and higher-throughput machine networks. Its electronics are supplied with 24 V DC (-15 %/+20 %), and the internal bus circuitry regenerates the operating power needed by the connected terminal cluster. One coupler can manage up to 255 EtherCAT devices, which supports extensive I/O expansion from a single connection point. For longer cable runs, the shielded two-wire fieldbus can extend to 1200 m between repeaters, and the network connection is made through a 9-pin shielded D-Sub socket using shielded copper cable with two 0.25 mm² conductors. That arrangement reduces the need for extra gateway hardware when several terminal blocks must be grouped in one remote station.

Electrical isolation between the fieldbus and I/O level is rated at 500 V, which helps protect the control side from ground-potential differences. The I/O terminals have a current limit of 2 A, and the process image can reach 4 × (240 B in / 240 B out) for applications that need larger data exchange. During continuous operation, the device dissipates only 3 W, which helps keep cabinet heat low during dense installations. The housing carries an IP20 protection rating for control-cabinet use, and its 65 × 100 × 73 mm plastic enclosure mounts on a DIN rail in about the same width as a standard power supply. The device can also present three virtual PROFIBUS nodes when larger applications need clearer segmentation, and the power contacts can distribute field power along the terminal stack to reduce extra feed wiring.
