The EK1828-0010 from Beckhoff is an EtherCAT Coupler designed to connect 100BASE-TX EtherCAT networks to EtherCAT Terminals. It can communicate over EtherCAT at a rate of 100 Mbit/s and is equipped with two RJ45 interfaces for network connectivity.

The EK1828-0010 EtherCAT coupler connects EtherCAT Terminals (ELxxxx) to Ethernet/EtherCAT wires, and it can go up to 100 meters between stations. The coupler can work with up to 65,535 EtherCAT terminals in a system and keeps the transmission delay to about 1 microsecond. The voltage is 24 V DC, and the range of error is -15% to +20%. Eight digital outlets built into the coupler can handle ohmic, inductive, and lamp loads. Each output channel can accommodate a maximum current of 0.5 A and is incapable of short-circuiting, as the short-circuit current is typically less than 2 A. It takes 60 µs to switch from TON to TOFF and 300 µs to switch back. The coupler has safety against reverse voltage, and the breaking energy per channel is less than 150 mJ. The EK1828-0010 EtherCAT coupler meets the EMC standards EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4 and is rated IP20 for security. It can work in temperatures from -25°C to +60°C and can handle up to 95% relative humidity without condensation. It fits on a 35 mm DIN rail and is made of plastic.

The EK1828-0010 gives the coupler direct power and has an output of up to 5 V and 1 A. I/O parts get their power from the field source through power connections that can handle up to 10 A. With the help of EtherCAT joints or extensions, the coupler can work with either line or star layouts. The case is very thick and has LEDs for signals. It works with solid conductors using straight plug-in wiring technology.
