The EK1818-0000 is a coupler unit from the EK EtherCAT Couplers series produced by Beckhoff. It links discrete field signals to an upper-level controller over the EtherCAT backplane and supplies local power to connected terminals. Within an automation cell, the module serves as the network entry point, translating sensor and actuator lines into a deterministic real-time data stream and reducing cabinet wiring.

Communication speed on the primary network side is 100 MBaud, and the medium is routed through twin 2 x RJ45 ports that support line or ring topologies. The transport layer follows the EtherCAT protocol, so telegrams are processed on the fly without local buffering, which minimizes cycle times. Nominal input power for the logic and the upstream terminals is 24 VDC, and this single supply also powers the eight sensor lines. Input debouncing is handled internally with a 3 ms filter, so mechanical contacts can be connected without extra hardware. Although no CoE interface is present and distributed clocks are not supported, deterministic timing is maintained by the EtherCAT frame itself, and cable runs up to 100 m can be used with standard Cat-5e shielded twisted pair.

The module provides 8 digital input channels for sensors such as proximity switches and 4 digital output channels for small actuators. Each output can source up to 0.5 A/channel, allowing direct drive of relays or indicator lamps, while the shared power-contact bus carries a maximum of 10 A to downstream I/O terminals. Integrated output stages dissipate 150 mJ of braking energy per channel, helping protect the device during inductive shutdowns. All components reside in an IP20 housing intended for cabinet installation where ambient dust and moisture control are provided by the enclosure.
