Product Description:
The EK1814-0000 is an EtherCAT coupler module produced by Beckhoff and assigned to the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It links distributed I/O stations to the real-time fieldbus so that controllers receive fast digital signals over standard Ethernet wiring. Within an automation cabinet, the unit serves as the interface between upstream network segments and local 24 VDC sensors and actuators. It also transfers process data between the EtherCAT network and attached terminals, allowing local signals to be gathered and switched through a compact station.
Its communication channel operates at 100 MBaud, and the physical layer is provided through 2 × RJ45 sockets that form the EtherCAT in and out ports. The power contacts forward a nominal 24 VDC supply to field devices, while each output channel can deliver up to 0.5 A for coils, pilot valves, or indicator lamps. An internal E-bus carries module data and logic power at 1000 mA, allowing several terminal slices to be added without external feeds. The permitted 100 m copper segment between couplers keeps layouts simple on spread-out machinery and still meets the propagation limits of the protocol. This lets the coupler support distributed mounting while maintaining direct communication with the control system.
The signal path through the coupler adds only 1 µs of transit time, supporting precise synchronization among distributed axes. Each input channel is conditioned by a 3 ms filter that suppresses contact bounce, and the outputs energize in typically 60 µs after an ON command and release in about 300 µs after an OFF command. Four digital inputs draw 3 mA each, and four transistor outputs share the internal bus energy. The 10 A current rating of the power contacts allows downstream loads such as pneumatic valve islands to be supplied through the backplane without additional wiring. These response times help the module handle fast signal changes while keeping wiring compact inside small machine stations.
