Product Description:
The EK1541 is an optical EtherCAT coupler produced by Beckhoff for the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It links a fiber-optic fieldbus segment to a stack of Beckhoff I/O terminals, allowing distributed sensors and actuators to be integrated into deterministic control architectures. Within an automation cell, the unit serves as a gateway that translates physical-layer signals while preserving the timing and addressing rules of the EtherCAT Device Protocol. The fiber connection also provides electrical isolation between network sections, helping prevent interference and ground loops in machines with electrically noisy equipment.
This coupler transmits real-time frames at 100 Mbaud through two Versatile Link POF connectors that accept polymer optical fiber with a 1 mm core. A typical internal processing delay of 1 µs helps maintain the short cycle times required by motion and process control applications. With a maximum segment reach of 50 m, the optical link covers most machine-length runs while remaining immune to electromagnetic interference. The optical transceiver operates at a wavelength of 650 nm. On the receiving side, signals as low as -26 dBm are accepted, while the optical transmitter provides a minimum output of -13.5 dBm to maintain an adequate power budget. Address selection is handled through three rotary ID switches, providing 0 to 999 manual node settings. The device also supports up to 4,096 Hot Connect IDs for automatic reconfiguration of modular stations.
The coupler forwards the logic supply through two 24 V power contacts rated for a continuous current of 10 A at 24 V DC, allowing downstream terminals to receive substantial power without additional supply wiring. Up to 65,535 I/O terminals can be addressed in one EtherCAT network, and internal mapping organizes the process data exchanged with the connected terminals. The IP20 protection rating makes the device suitable for installation inside a control cabinet, where the enclosure protects it from unintended contact and larger solid objects. Standard convection cooling removes operating heat without requiring an integrated fan or a separate liquid-cooling circuit.
