Beckhoff’s EK1501-0010 belongs to the EK EtherCAT Couplers series and acts as an optical gateway between a control network and the company’s modular I/O terminals. As a coupler, it converts the EtherCAT Device Protocol transported over fiber into the internal E-bus used to power and synchronize each downstream terminal. The unit is designed for distributed automation nodes where long-distance, noise-resistant communication must be combined with dense I/O expansion. It also extends the system power contacts alongside the data connection, helping keep field wiring compact within the control enclosure.
The fiber interface operates at a line speed of 100 MBaud, transmitting deterministic frames over single-mode glass fiber routed through two SC duplex receptacles. An optical attenuation budget of 10 dBm and a recommended transmission distance of 20 km support cabinet-to-cabinet links across large production sites without repeaters. Within this range, the optical link can tolerate connector and splice losses commonly encountered in industrial installations. Using the EtherCAT Device Protocol, the coupler provides 4.2 GB of addressable I/O space and supports as many as 65,535 EtherCAT terminals. It also recognizes 4,096 Hot Connect IDs, allowing machine sections to be disconnected and reattached during operation without creating address conflicts.
For power distribution, the internal copper contacts carry up to 10 A at 24 VDC, which is the same supply rail used to power the electronics through the front terminals. A mechanical clip secures the housing to a 35 mm DIN rail, providing structural support while maintaining the intended control-panel installation. The molded enclosure has an IP20 ingress protection rating and is intended for use inside a closed electrical cabinet. The extended addressing capacity supports automation systems with large numbers of distributed signals, while the fiber connection provides electrical isolation between remote equipment sections. Its 24 VDC logic domain allows the coupler to operate with common industrial control power supplies without requiring a separate voltage system.
