The EK1300-0000 is an EtherCAT coupler manufactured by Beckhoff and supplied within the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. It forms the head station for a stack of EL-series I/O terminals, forwarding process data between the field level and a higher-level controller through standard Fast Ethernet cabling. In an automation line, the unit provides both communication and supply potentials, allowing distributed sensors and actuators to be integrated into a deterministic EtherCAT segment without adding dedicated controllers at each node.

The primary network link is established through two shielded, screwable, P-coded M8 sockets; these compact connectors ensure vibration-resistant attachment of field cables while maintaining signal integrity. Data exchange operates on 100 Mbit Fast Ethernet (100BASE-TX), which matches the EtherCAT device protocol used on the coupler’s MAC layer. Internal electronics and the attached terminal stack are energized by a system supply of 24 VDC, and high-current loads are routed through separate power contacts that can pass up to 10 A to downstream modules. For logic functions, the E-bus distributes 2 A at 5 V, permitting several dozen terminals to share one voltage domain without external regulators. Hot Connect support is absent, so the station must remain powered down before module changes. No integrated PLC is provided, keeping control responsibilities within the central master.

The coupler allows copper segments up to 100 m between nodes, giving ample reach for cabinet-to-cabinet wiring on factory floors. It clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail (EN 60715) to simplify enclosure assembly and grounding, and its electronics are protected to IP20, indicating safe indoor use inside control cabinets. Compatibility is limited to ELxxxx EtherCAT terminals, ensuring mechanical alignment and the correct E-bus pinout while leaving application logic to the supervising controller.
