The EK1101-0000 is an EtherCAT coupler produced by Beckhoff within the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. By acting as the head station between the EtherCAT fieldbus and a set of Beckhoff E-bus terminals, the unit enables decentralized I/O segments to communicate with a host controller in real time. In an automation cabinet, the device provides the protocol translation and power relay functions required to aggregate digital or analog sensing channels, so PLCs can access distributed signals through a single Ethernet link.

Communication performance is anchored by a baud rate of 100 MBaud on the EtherCAT side, and the wiring is presented through 2 x RJ45 sockets that enable line or ring topologies. The internal terminal rail is energized by an E-bus logic supply of 5 V, while galvanic separation from higher voltages is ensured by an isolation barrier rated at 500 V. Data are carried over the Ethernet 100BASE-TX medium, and the unit adheres to the EtherCAT Device Protocol for deterministic exchange. It installs in any orientation thanks to its variable installation position and snaps onto a 35 mm mounting rail. With a protection rating of IP20, it is intended for closed control cabinets.

Network segments can be laid out up to 100 m between couplers without repeaters, and a system may assign as many as 4096 Hot-Connect identifiers so terminal strings can be reconfigured during operation. The electronics tolerate ambient humidity up to 95% without condensation, and the design omits a CoE interface because parameterization is handled directly through the EtherCAT master. Power to the downstream terminals is available on twin contacts rated at 24 VDC, 10 A, while the control electronics draw a separate logic supply of 24 VDC. These provisions support stable field installations on standard DIN rail wiring practices.
