The EK1100-0008 is an EtherCAT coupler produced by Beckhoff as a member of the EK EtherCAT Couplers series. Acting as the head station, the unit links a string of modular I/O terminals to an EtherCAT fieldbus. It translates local E-bus signals into standard 100BASE-TX frames so controllers can exchange process data in real time across industrial automation lines.
It draws a supply of 24 VDC for its electronics and passes the same line to the power contacts that feed attached terminals. The EtherCAT bus enters and leaves through 2 × M8 sockets, keeping the connectors compact. During operation, the link runs at 100 Mbaud, which aligns with Fast Ethernet timing for submillisecond cycles. Copper segments may reach 100 m between devices, which is the limit for 100BASE-TX cabling. An enclosure rating of IP20 provides protection against finger contact but requires installation inside a suitable control panel. No configuration is required because node addressing is handled automatically. The housing snaps onto an EN 60715 35 mm rail for quick installation.
The integrated EtherCAT controller can forward data to as many as 65,535 downstream terminals, allowing large assemblies of digital and analog slices on a single node. Current delivered through the two 24 V power contacts reaches 10 A, supporting loads such as relays or valve clusters without external distribution blocks. The internal E-bus generates a regulated 5 V supply, and the backplane can source up to 2 A so each terminal receives the required logic power. Communication uses the EtherCAT Device Protocol over the 100BASE-TX medium. The coupler can operate at a relative humidity of up to 95% without condensation. Passive cooling supports installation in densely populated control cabinets used in packaging machines, material-handling systems, and process skids.
