The EJ5042-0010 is an SSI encoder interface module manufactured by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plugins series. It serves as a compact plug-in that transfers position data from external single-turn or multi-turn encoders to an EtherCAT controller, allowing precise axis monitoring and closed-loop positioning tasks in industrial automation. The module is intended for applications where encoder feedback must be read accurately and passed into a real-time control system without adding a large amount of panel space.
This module provides 2 independent channels, and each channel acts as an SSI master. For high-speed sampling, it uses a default clock rate of 10 MHz, which sets how quickly the differential D+/D- and C+/C- lines switch during data exchange. Each frame can include up to 64 bit of position data, so long travel ranges or fine angular resolution can be handled without overflow. Error checking uses an appended cyclic redundancy code with 8 bit, while additional operating information is transferred through 2 bit of status. The unit synchronizes its sampling cycle to EtherCAT Distributed Clocks, which helps reduce time skew between multiple motion axes and supports consistent feedback capture across a machine.
Power for the onboard electronics is routed through the backplane via Up contacts, while encoder excitation must be provided by an external supply so the load on the EtherCAT infrastructure remains low. Physical size is kept to 12 x 66 x 55 mm, allowing dense stacking on a signal distribution board without exceeding the standard 15 mm plug-in pitch. All components are housed in a slim enclosure with a protection rating of IP20, making the module suitable for cabinet environments where there is no direct exposure to dust or liquids. The front edge carries clearly labeled solder pins for D+, D-, C+, and C-, which helps keep wiring organized when shielded encoder cables are connected.
