The EJ2809 is a digital output plug-in produced by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plug-in series. This compact, board-level component delivers discrete control signals from a machine controller to field devices such as solenoid valves, relays, and indicator lamps in automated machinery. The module plugs into a signal distribution board, providing the wiring density and compact form factor associated with backplane systems. Its direct board connection also reduces the amount of individual field wiring required inside a machine. The underlying network provides deterministic timing for coordinated control operations.
Each output operates from a nominal control voltage of 24 V DC and can source up to 0.5 A per channel. This capacity allows the module to drive compatible inductive loads, including contactors, without interposing relays. The module provides 16 individually switchable P-channel transistor outputs for high-density control applications. Its housing is only 12 mm wide and 66 mm tall, helping conserve space on the signal distribution board. Short-circuit detection and overload monitoring are handled within the module, and related diagnostic data is transferred cyclically to the PLC. Rapid update cycles allow machine sequences and other coordinated operations to be controlled with millisecond-level timing.
The housing has a depth of 55 mm, allowing the plug-in to sit flush on a signal distribution board that provides common supply rails and centralized connectors. Communication takes place over EtherCAT, keeping the digital output pattern synchronized with upstream analog or encoder data on the same network. As a digital output module, the unit does not require the input filter or threshold settings associated with input devices. Configuration primarily involves assigning addresses and selecting the appropriate watchdog behavior. Channel status information and error flags remain accessible through standard process data objects, allowing the controller to monitor output conditions during operation.
