Product Description:
The EJ1918 is a safety I/O plug-in in the Beckhoff EJ EtherCAT Plug-ins series. Manufactured by Beckhoff, this compact module brings configurable clock outputs and fail-safe input channels to a carrier board, allowing safety functions to be integrated directly into distributed control panels. The plug-in connects through the EtherCAT backplane and monitors compatible field devices while distributing synchronized test pulses to peripheral equipment. Its compact format supports applications where several I/O modules must be installed together on a densely populated carrier board.
The module provides 8 fail-safe inputs for emergency stop buttons, door switches, light curtains, and other safety devices. Each input channel is galvanically isolated to help separate field signals from the internal electronics. The module also provides 8 clock outputs, which generate timed test pulses for detecting open-circuit and short-circuit faults in connected sensors. The input circuitry accommodates sensors powered by 24 V DC and is designed for potential-free contacts, meaning the connected field device does not supply its own voltage. With an IP20 protection rating, the plug-in is suitable for installation inside an enclosed control cabinet. Its profile rises only 55 mm above the carrier board, preserving space around closely arranged modules and associated wiring.
The module has an overall height of 152 mm, while its front face is only 12 mm wide. This narrow profile allows adjacent EJ modules to be positioned with minimal spacing on the carrier board. The housing withstands mechanical impacts of up to 15 g, helping the card tolerate vibration and shocks that can occur in industrial control equipment. Internal self-test routines monitor input redundancy, cross-fault conditions, and output timing during operation. These routines achieve 98.3% diagnostic coverage to support functional safety assessments and fault detection. The combination of a narrow housing, backplane connectivity, isolated inputs, and integrated diagnostics allows the module to operate without separate external monitoring hardware for its internal safety checks.
