The EJ1889-1005 is a digital input plug-in produced by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plugins series. It is installed on a signal distribution board so that field wiring can be completed through a backplane rather than discrete terminal blocks. Within an EtherCAT network, it collects ground-referenced sensor states and passes them to the higher-level controller; therefore, it streamlines machine I/O without adding separate wiring runs or standalone bus couplers.

This module is only 12 mm wide, allowing high channel density when several plugins are lined up on the carrier. Its vertical profile is kept to 66 mm, and the depth behind the board is 55 mm, so enclosure planners can calculate clearances precisely. Sixteen sensor connections are available, and the 16 inputs share a common ground while each channel is scanned individually. Control electronics are supplied from the system distribution rail, and the plugin operates from a 24 V DC nominal feed referenced to the 24 V-UP contact. Signal acquisition follows a ground-switching topology, meaning the sensor side switches the return path while the positive rail remains fixed. This arrangement simplifies wiring for devices that already switch to ground, such as mechanical limit switches or PNP sensors with open-collector outputs.

An IP20 protection rating limits the device to cabinets or closed machine compartments, and its design is validated for installation up to 2,000 m above sea level without derating. Physical mis-mating is prevented because mechanical coding is incorporated and the connector has dedicated coding pins 1 and 3. Distributed Clocks support is absent because precise sub-microsecond synchronization is unnecessary for simple binary inputs. During assembly, the plugin slides onto the signal distribution board where it locks in one step, and the board then provides the 24 V-UP reference and distributes EtherCAT as part of the backplane connection.
