The EJ1101 is a communication coupler module from Beckhoff delivered as part of the EJ EtherCAT Plugins series. Mounted directly on a signal distribution board, it forms a compact interface that feeds real-time EtherCAT traffic into the array of downstream I/O channels on the machine. By sharing the same board with other EJ devices, cabinet wiring is reduced and latency stays low in compact packaging or assembly lines. Because it is mounted on the distribution board, the coupler avoids extra interconnect layers between the network link and the attached plugin modules.
Network performance depends on several transmission parameters. The EtherCAT segment used by the EJ1101 operates at 100 MBaud, a rate that matches standard Fast Ethernet signaling while maintaining distributed clock accuracy. Physical connectivity is provided through 2 x RJ45 sockets, supporting line or redundant ring topologies without extra media converters. The copper pairs must be CAT-5 Shielded Ethernet, a medium that preserves signal integrity against external EMI. Within those limits, each cable run can span 100 m, giving adequate reach between modular machine sections. Protocol handling follows the EtherCAT Device Protocol, so the module appears as a standard slave to the master controller. To simplify addressing, the coupler supports 256 configurable IDs set through pins on the distribution board.
Field power for connected sensors is distributed from the machine’s 24 V rail, and the module itself expects 24 VDC on its supply pins while drawing logic power of 3.3 V from the E-bus backplane. An IP20 protection class indicates that it is finger-safe, but it must be installed in an enclosed panel. Reliable operation is specified up to 2000 m above sea level, so altitude-related derating is unnecessary for most factory floors. The separate backplane logic supply reduces the electrical load placed on the field power connections during normal operation.
