Product Description:
The EJ1008 is a digital input module produced by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plugins series. Its compact plug-in form factor supports direct PCB mounting on an application-specific signal distribution board, reducing point-to-point wiring within the control system. This arrangement allows machine builders to reproduce established I/O layouts across machines that use the same carrier board design. Within an automation cell, the module captures binary field signals and forwards their states through an EtherCAT coupler. The connected controller can then use this input data to coordinate mechanical actuators with programmed logic sequences. Spring contacts provide the electrical interface between the module and the signal distribution board, avoiding the need for separate terminal wiring around the individual input channels.
The onboard electronics operate from a control voltage of 24 V DC, which matches the sensor supply commonly used in industrial control cabinets. Each input uses a 1-wire connection, so the signal and sensor ground share a common reference on the carrier PCB. Compliance with EN 61131-2 Type 3 indicates that the input circuitry meets the residual current and switching-level requirements for compatible proximity switches and other binary sensors. A hardware debounce time of 3 ms is applied to every channel. This internal filter suppresses contact bounce before the corresponding bit values enter the EtherCAT process image. All channel states are transferred cyclically in a single byte, which keeps process-data mapping compact and allows the controller to read the complete input group in one data field.
A row of 8 status LEDs on the top edge mirrors the incoming signal states and provides immediate local diagnostic feedback. Each indicator corresponds to an individual channel, making active signals visible without requiring separate measurement equipment. The module provides no Distributed Clocks support, so applications that require timestamped events or nanosecond-level alignment must obtain that timing capability elsewhere in the EtherCAT system. It is therefore intended for standard cyclic input acquisition rather than high-precision event capture. Uniform dimensions and established pin assignments help the module fit carrier boards designed around the EJ plug-in format. Its compact interface is useful in machine sections where board space and wiring density are important design considerations.
