The CX5010-0120 is an embedded PC module produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed as the CPU segment of a modular controller, it combines industrial computing and field I/O handling so that PLC logic, HMI tasks, and motion control can reside in a single DIN-rail unit. By integrating directly with the E-Bus terminal stack, the unit acts as the central automation processor for machine cells and building systems that need deterministic Ethernet networking and a compact form factor. Its modular arrangement keeps the controller and terminal I/O in one compact assembly for cabinet-based automation.
At its core, an Intel Atom Z510 1.1 GHz CPU executes user programs while the operating system uses 512 MB RAM to buffer variables and diagnostics. Nonvolatile storage is provided by a 128 MB Compact Flash card that retains the boot image and TwinCAT project files. Two front-mounted Gigabit Ethernet ports provide 2 × RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbit/s connectivity for plant networks and remote access, and external devices can be connected through 4 × USB 2.0 sockets. A DVI-D output drives external panels for local visualization, while the unit ships without a TwinCAT runtime so only the required software components need to be installed. The integrated E-Bus interface streams process data to terminal slices and permits up to 2 A of I/O current without an additional supply.
The housing measures 100 × 106 × 92 mm, which supports installation in compact switchgear cabinets and on crowded DIN rails. Internal dissipation peaks at 12 W, so fanless cooling is suitable for normal operation. The logic section is powered from a single 24 V DC source, and insulation to the field level has a dielectric strength of 500 Veff. An IP20 rating provides protection against accidental finger contact with internal parts. The front-facing connection layout also keeps network, display, and service access easy to reach after the module is mounted.
